Edgar Award Nominee for Best Young Adult Mystery * A Kirkus Best Book
Raw and moving, this contemporary realistic debut novel will leave readers of E. Lockhart and Gayle Forman breathless as it unflinchingly unfolds the tragic secrets being kept in a small, deceptively idyllic town.
“Gorgeously written and helmed by a protagonist with an indelibly fierce heart." (starred review from Kirkus)
“Keen plotting, evocative writing, and dynamic characterization make French a writer to watch.” (starred review from Booklist)
Seventeen-year-old Darcy Prentiss has long held the title of “town slut.” She knows how to have a good time, sure, but she isn’t doing anything all the guys haven’t done. But when you’re a girl with a reputation, every little thing that happens seems to keep people whispering—especially when your ex-best friend goes missing.
But if anyone were to look closer at Darcy, they’d realize there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface. Staying out late, hooking up, and telling lies is what Darcy does to forget. Forget about the mysterious disappearance of her friend. Forget about the dark secret she and her cousin Nell share.
Forget about that hazy Fourth of July night. So when someone in town anonymously nominates Darcy to be in the running for Bay Festival Princess—a cruel act only someone with a score to settle would make—all of the things that Darcy wants to keep hidden threaten to erupt in ways she wasn’t prepared to handle…and isn’t sure if she can.
Grit A Novel Gillian French Books
1. Unique. I feel like Grit might be a divisive novel among YA readers; it’s quite different from most of the books available in the category. That said, I loved it. It’s a slow burn mystery set alongside a raw (and really sad) coming of age story, and just as its title conveys, it is gritty.2. All the atmosphere. Gillian French has a gift for setting scenes with very specific, vivid details. The summery rural Maine existence MC Darcy experiences is almost palpable.
3. Girl bonds. Darcy’s closest friends are her older sister, Mags, and her beautiful cousin, Nell, and I thought the depiction of the girls’ complex trio was very well done. They bicker, but they’re also fiercely loyal to one another. Darcy’s relationship with her mom is also notable; it was interesting to see how they related to one another in light of their similar personalities and flaws.

Grit A Novel Gillian French Books Reviews
Absolutely amazing! Great read, can't wait for the next book and many more!!
Intriguing and well written with the author keeping the suspense going until the very end.
Read for book club. Enjoyed the writing style. In the end, thought it was a bit predictable. Overall a decent read.
Excellent story telling that keeps you intrigued from the very first page. This was an exciting mystery with a local Maine flair and realistic characters. Darcy is stubborn and tough but so tender and caring. The author makes it possible to feel as if you are living it along with the main character. I loved it and would highly recommend it.
This book was great fun to read, I really enjoyed it. I picked this out due to the small town in Maine theme. I thought it was full of intrigue and excitement, a page - turner for sure! I enjoyed all the characters and loved the humor intertwined throughout the book. Through Gillian's depiction of each character I came to feel I knew them personally. I would recommend this to all ages for a fun summer read. I look forward to more works by Gillian French.
My headline pretty much speaks for itself. I didn’t connect with any of the characters in this book. There was never any point in the story where I legitimately wanted to keep reading. But I kept going, hoping that at some point things would pick up and become more interesting. They never did.
And the biggest question you want the answer to, you never really get an answer to.
Could not put this book down and yea, stayed up way too late gobbling this story up. I was hooked from page one. The story lines, characters and action are all compelling and realistic. You are drawn into Darcy's world, her secrets, her pain and her courage. Got a real feel and understanding of a summer as a teen blueberry raker and underdog in a small Maine town. Would recommend this book to teens and adults. I laughed, cried and cringed...got angry and scared. To me, that is an excellent reading experience. Will look for more of Gillian French's writing.
