Daphne Lindstrom, the beautiful young wife of Red Gap's most prominent citizen, vanished mysteriously not long after her unhappy marriage. More than a century later, botany student Ben Platt finds himself laid up in the former redwood logging town, now reborn as a tourist destination, thanks to a novel based on Daphne's story. But theories on her fate are not the only things to survive. For generations Daphne has haunted the men of one family, driving them to obsession and disaster. When she appears to Ben, he must decide whether to answer her call for help, and at what cost.

I read a lot of romance, fantasy, mystery and pretty much anything. I had gotten this book for free a while back and started reading it on my Kindle without reading the summary/description. It was a very engaging book in the first half. It starts off great with Ben and his girlfriend breaking up and Ben heading out. He meets with an accident and winds up in Red Gap. Finding out more about the people in Red Gap and the local legends was very interesting. I thought that I was settling in for a great read. Then, about half-way into the book, when he started getting obsessed with Daphne (a woman who disappeared many, many years ago), I just lost interest. I'm not quite sure why... the writing was still good. I think it may have been that I didn't see a way for him to be with his obsession (Daphne) and the story didn't seem to move much (just a lot of him obsessed with Daphne). I ended up skipping ahead to the end to see how it turned out. While the book is advertised as a "romantic" book, having a hallucination/ghost as one-half of the couple just didn't do it for me.

not sure what i did expect, but it was enjoyable and had a surprising end.worth a try for those who enjoy a change in from the usual ghost story.
I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't what I read in Everliving. This book gripped me from early pages. I'm not much of a fan of paranormal fiction, but I was very entertained by this story.
Really kept you glued to the book. Would read more by this author anytime. It was a great read. Thank you.
As time has passed, I have discovered that this book has remained remarkably clear in my mind, and I think about it frequently. That is a lot more than I can say about most books.

Also, it was a book unlike any other I have read; ghosts, romance, environmental awareness, and mystery were all equally represented. It is worth reading just to experience the odd, yet mesmerizing way in which all of these things work together to create a compelling novel.
This is a charming story about love. The writing is excellent and the editing is very professional. I did not find any of the usual mistakes found in the free books. The writer obviously did her research about botany and climbing very large trees. I thought she was a botanist and had climbed trees until I read her info at the end of the book. Since no author can know everything, research is something that gives a book that feel of authenticity.

I loved the characters. They are so well described, they seemed like real people. The background descriptions also provide a feel of realism. All in all - this is lovely writing about great characters and without any violence or blood and gore.

This author has a lot of talent. If you are looking for a very well written book that makes you want to keep reading long past the time you should be turning out the lights, this is the book for you.
I wish I could give this four-and-a-half stars, because there were only minor things that niggled at me, and only at the end. I'm the kind of girl who likes all loose ends neatly tied up, and there were a couple left dangling. Those loose ends, however, have made me think about this book quite a bit since I finished reading, so all-in-all, not a huge issue.

I loved that Ms. Dudley did not write this preaching from either side's podium it neither came firmly down on logging's side nor on environmentalism's side. She simply lets the reader color the story with his or her own opinions and beliefs. The story is rich with detail, botanical knowledge, and atmosphere. The setting is so expertly crafted, I felt as though I'd been plunked right down into this small forest town at the onset of a misty autumn. Benjamin Platt was an engaging protagonist, with a dry, quiet wit and self-effacing demeanor. The mystery of Daphne Lindstrom's fate provided the backbone of this story without being obnoxious about it. I guessed correctly before the big reveal - but only just a page or two before. And the ending - whoa, didn't see it coming.

This is a definite must-read for fans of paranormal with romantic elements. I will be reading this again, and I can't give a higher compliment than that.
I almost didn't finish reading after the first quarter of the book, but read the end and had to find out what happened. So I went to where I left off and kept reading. The only reason it was hard for me to keep reading is that it seems too drawn out without much happening. However, after the first half of the book, it got much better.

I thought the story had a fresh plot. Even the ending was different than I expected. I was relieved it ended well, even if it wasn't my favorite way to end a love story.

It didn't seem like much of a romance to me, even though it was about several peoples loves. Somehow it didn't feel real though. It felt more like a historical recording - a long one. I don't think I'll read this again, but I did like it.

FYI, blush factor is mild. Deep love without the details. That's why I give it 4 stars instead of 3. Nothing really wrong with the book, it just didn't click for me.
