The winters of ’76 and ’77 in the greater Detroit and Oakland County area of Michigan were extremely harsh, with record snowfall, brutal temperatures, and incessant howling winds. During these winters, a deranged serial killer preyed upon preteen and early teen victims, both male and female. As snow would begin to fall, the killer would hunt and abduct them, keep them at a secluded location, bathe them, meticulously groom them, feed them their favorite meal, and then wait for the next snowstorm. Under the cover of the next snowfall, the killer would hide their corpses in snowbanks on secondary roads, where they would be found by passing motorists.

This story is a fictional account of an over-the-hill detective, Frank Pellegrini, and his strange obsession in the pursuit of that killer.

The Dark Gray Blanket eBook H Burns

I was a little skeptical when the author and ALL of the reviewers on the book jacket only used their first initial and NO Name. What's up with that?

The first few chapters seemed very amateurish but then the writer found his voice and is a decent writer. However, I think he missed describing the tremendous terror that this insane psycho caused the citizenry during those 2 winters. I am from a Detroit suburb and found his facts, especially the locations of the bodies to be really off. It is definitely a work of fiction.

The most interesting part was the background on the city of Detroit. I have lived there for over 40 years and am a big proponent of the city. I learned a lot about the history of Detroit which I had never heard before. That which actually made the book worth it!

It was a decent read but not as good as I expected

The Dark Gray Blanket eBook H Burns Reviews

H. Burns commanded my attention from the first sentence to the last. I found his fusion of fact and fiction, descriptive detail and character development very refreshing. When the plot not only thickened, but had some unanticipated twists, I found myself dedicated to the end. This is a must read!
A true mystery thriller! I bought this book on the recommendation of a close friend and I am so glad that I did. The storyline, with its vivid and haunting twists and turns, kept me engrossed from the first to the last page. I encourage all devotees of mystery thrillers to read this book - it is a suspenseful tale artfully told!
I don’t read a lot. But I tell you what it kept on the edge many times over and over . It kept me reading it to the very end. So take my advice buy the book you will like it as much as I did. I’m buying a few copy’s for my friends for Christmas. You will not want to miss the drama and we’ll written book. Thanks to the author god bless you!
Always like books that hold my attention from the first page. This book clearly satisfies that requirement for me. The words that Burns uses to tell the story vividly paint the picture of those events that took place over the years. Impressive first novel which I could not put down until I finished it. Will read it again and recommend to others. Well done!
The Dark Gray Blanket is a very intriguing mystery that I read every second of my free time until I finished the book. The author does an excellent job of putting the reader into every scene and every moment. The main character elicits a wide range of emotions from the reader, from empathy to disgust. There are many unexpected twists and turns to the plot. Great Read!
Burns homers on his first at-bat in the big leagues. A riveting story based on actual characters and places within mere miles of his families home in Detroit as the horror unfolded. His rendition is sparkling and is difficult to put aside for other stuff, like eating and sleeping. Try it! Guaranteed- you'll like it.
Growing up in southeastern Michigan during the seventies I remember all too well the terror that gripped metro Detroit while the serial murders fictionalized in this book occurred. After stumbling on an obscure, esoteric looking advertisement for "The Dark Gray Blanket" on the back pages of my morning paper, I read a few online reviews and decided to take a chance. Definitely worth my time and the price of a used copy. Although the book does have an unmistakable self-published feel uneven character development, some scattered plot lines, and a few self-moralizing side anecdotes exposing thinly veiled political and religious views; it's overall a very entertaining read. Once the story gets moving it really takes off and any missteps by the author are easily overlooked.

The character of Frank is extremely compelling ( a bit of an anti-hero) and his motivation for capturing the killer is an intriguing subplot that ultimately blends well into the story's overall narrative and larger mystery. Moreover, plenty of surprises kept me thoroughly engaged while the extended ending was an endearing wrap up. Although again, not an approach ordinarily found in a mainstream publication. The book is also loaded with well researched background on the history of Detroit and its sociopolitical climate at the time of the crimes - maybe not highly relevant to a reader unfamiliar with the area but I enjoyed the interesting facts. So much that I think the author might have made a bigger splash writing a non-fictional account of the murders as opposed to a novel.

In summary the author tackled an ambitious project and I admire the effort, doing an exceptional job of weaving an exciting story out of largely forgotten events . If this book were to ever find its way into the right hands, I could honestly see a screenplay for a B movie action/thriller. I plan on sending a copy to my sister. As adults we've reflected on these tragic occurrences more than once and I think she'll appreciate the book.
